Information for Schools
Straight Talking has been successfully delivering its programme in schools since 1997. Participating schools are enthusiastic about our work and the course has become established as part of their curriculum. Last year, 5000 pupils participated and feedback from teachers is overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

Straight Talking has
credibility of narrative of the reality of being a teenage parent, greater
emotional empathy due to the delivery by peer mentors revealed through
student evaluations of Straight Taling sessions are more positively
rated by students than evaluations of teacher led sessions.
Anecdotal evidence of careers lessons which follow the Striaght Talking
project indicate some students have a more positive reponse to careers
education.

What is the aim of the course?
The course is designed to raise young people’s awareness of the problems of teenage pregnancy. It gives them an educated choice for their future.
Which year groups is it for?
The course is appropriate for Years 9 & 10.
How long is the course?
The course is ideally 5 sessions of one lesson per week. It can be shortened to 4. Themes running through the course make it difficult to edit it further.
Where does it fit into the curriculum?
The course fits within the school’s Sex and Relationships Education programme.
What type of schools can participate?
All schools can participate. Straight Talking delivers courses in:
- Mainstream co-ed
- Mainstream single sex (both girls and boys schools)
- Special needs
- Pupil Referral Units
- Colleges
- Faith schools
How do we work with schools?
We like to tailor the course to the needs of the school. A senior member of staff will visit the school to discuss the course material before any courses are delivered. A post course discussion will also take place with teachers to evaluate for any alterations needed for the following year.
How are teachers involved?
We encourage teachers to participate in the sessions. It is important that teachers are involved so that they can pick up any issues afterwards.
Who delivers the course?
Straight Talking trains and employs young mothers and fathers to deliver the course. Young fathers are ideally suited to delivering the course in boys schools.
